ACAD provides an intimate learning environment with a diverse faculty and student body. We foster that diversity by welcoming international students from around the world.

ACAD’s Student Experinece Office is dedicated to making your time at ACAD as enjoyable as possible. Through Learning Assistance Resources (LAR) and the Student Resource Centre (SRC), we provide programs and services for incoming international and mobility/exchange students and students going overseas to study abroad. As an international Student at ACAD, you’ll have the support you need to be successful. ACAD’s Learning Assistance Resources (LAR)  provide assistance to international students on a variety of matters, including:

  • Pre-arrival information
  • Advice on Canadian Immigration regulations, including the Study Permits, Visas, Work Permits, etc.
  • Housing assistance
  • Medical insurance information
  • Social opportunities and excursions
  • Pre-departure assistance
  • Post-Graduation Work Permits and permanent residency enquiries

LAR also provides advice, social opportunities including field trips and other events, links between students and other ACAD programs, tutorial and learning assistance resources as well as information pertaining to community cultural activities and social events.

In recent years the college has hosted students from many countries including: Australia, China, Colombia, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Norway, the Philippines, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the United Kingdom, UEA and the United States.

The College has an active student exchange program and is a member of the International Student Mobility Program. ACAD hosts international students while ACAD students have an opportunity to spend their third year studying at other art colleges and institutions in North America, Australia, the Czech Republic, England, Finland, France, Germany, Mexico, New Zealand, Scotland, Spain, Sweden and many other countries. ACAD expresses a welcoming attitude toward students from around the world.

  • January 2012 | Friday, January 13th International Students Lunch Buffet – ArtHole Cafeteria. Time: 12:00pm – 1:30pm. Meet the folks who are here to provide support for you – Admissions Staff, Academic Advisor, Learning Assistance and International Students Advisor, Student Counselors and the Registrar’s Office staff. You will also be able to meet student-mentors and find out first-hand the “skinny” on courses and instructors.
  • March 2012 | Saturday, March 10, 2012 – Royal Tyrrell Museum, Drumheller + Dinosaur Valley field trip.
  • April 2012 | Friday, April 20, 2012 – “Year-End Get-Together” International Students Lunch – ArtHole Cafeteria.
  • September 2012 | Friday, Sept. 14th – International Students “Welcome Round-up” – B-B-Q + Meet & Greet Lunch; ArtHole Cafeteria. Time: 12:00pm – 1:30pm. A chance to meet and chat with the Student Experience staff, meet international student mentors and familiarize oneself with support services available on ACAD campus – including Study Groups, Student Association, Tutoring, Advising, Counselling and Student Mentoring.
  • October – March 2012/13 small groups Field Trips:
    • Sat., October 20 - Banff + Banff Centre and Banff Galleries
    • Sat. November 10 - Lake Louise
    • Sat., December 01 – ever popular “Take a Break at the Beach”… West Edmonton Mall + Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton

Medical Insurance Information for International Students

Are you an international student? It is important that you subscribe to the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan as soon as you arrive in Canada. You will need an Alberta Health Care Identification Card, Blue Cross Card or another private insurance plan identification card (such as your ACADSA Benefits Plan card) to access the health care system, to visit a doctor or to receive reduced prices on medication at the pharmacy.
