Liberal Studies Guidelines: Student Rights And Responsibilities
Attendance

You are responsible for all material and assignments covered in class, even if you are absent. If you do not attend class regularly or fall behind, you may be asked to withdraw from the course. Please contact your instructor if illness or other circumstance causes two or more absences in a row.

Assignments

You must complete all components of all assignments and exams in accordance with instructor requirements for assignments and exams to pass the course. Assignments must be handed in on time even if you are absent. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure instructor receives assignment. Always keep a second copy of assignments as backup.

With the exception of final exams or their equivalent, instructors will not be responsible for student work left unclaimed after 30 calendar days beyond the end of term.

Late Assignments/Late Penalties

Late assignments may be handed in at the ACAD reception kiosk (hours: Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.). They will be date stamped and put in your instructor’s mailbox.

Late penalties are 5% per day, excluding weekends and holidays, for a maximum of two (2) weeks.

After two weeks, assignments will not be accepted and an “F” will be assigned for the course.

Instructors may assign more stringent penalties for late assignments as appropriate. Such penalties will be stated in writing in the course outline and assignment description.

Exams

Exams must be written at the scheduled time unless there is a valid excuse (e.g. doctor’s note, funeral notice or counselor’s note). You must contact your instructor within three days to reschedule or the exam will be void and the course failed. Students with special learning concerns who are taking the exam off-site must make accommodation arrangements with the instructor in writing one week prior to the exam.

Use of Electronics

Cell phones and other personal electronic equipment must be turned off during class time. Use of cell phones or other electronic aids during exams is strictly prohibited and will result in failure of the class.

Intellectual Honesty/Plagiarism

You must acknowledge ideas, information and statements that are not your own in all academic work. This avoids the charge of plagiarism and enables a reader to go to your sources if she/he wishes to read further. A plagiarized essay will receive an automatic zero (0) and may also result in failure of the course and/or a charge of academic misconduct (see ACAD Website for policies).

Students with Special Needs/Learning Assistance Resources

Students with some form of special need or learning difficulty may be eligible for academic accommodations to assist them in successful completion of their courses. You should visit the Learning Assistance Resources, Annex A, to ascertain your eligibility and to complete the necessary paperwork as soon as possible after registration. If accommodations are given, you should give your Accommodation Agreement Form to your instructor at the start of your course. Learning Assistance Resources can provide other forms of assistance or direction, such as peer tutoring, exam accommodations, academic advising, grant funding or referral to other resources. Please contact paul.szymanowski@acad.ca if you have any questions.

Grading

At the start of each course, you will receive a detailed Instructor Course Guideline specifying required course assignments, due dates and the percentage value of each. Liberal Studies follows College grading regulations--please see ACAD grading policy and procedures.

Grade Appeals

You should first discuss questions about grades with your instructor. If you are still not satisfied with an assigned grade, you may initiate a formal grade appeal by completing a “Grade Appeal Request Form,” available from the Registrar’s Office.
