Donald Dart, Senior Vice President, Finance & Corporate Services

As the College's Senior Business Officer Don is responsible for the administration and direction of the College¹s financial and corporate affairs. Reporting to the President, his areas of accountability encompass a range of support services including information technology and technical support, insurance and risk management, purchasing and inventory management, legal services, facility operations and capital projects, and financial services.

Having recently joined the College in early 2010 , Don has been a long serving executive in the public sector most recently as the CFO and Superintendent of the public school system in Calgary for the past twelve years. He has also held senior positions in the municipal, health and provincial sectors in Alberta.  He has been a member or chair of several task forces, committees and consortiums at the Provincial level throughout his career involving contracting, insurance , purchasing and financial affairs . Most recently he was Chair of the provincial Urban school Insurance Consortium.

Don is a Chartered Accountant with post secondary degrees in business and computing science from the University of Alberta (Bsc, BComm, MBA ). While active in a number of professional bodies including the Alberta Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Financial Executives Institute, Don has also been an active leader and participant for a number of community based organizations in both Calgary and Edmonton including the Boards of Scouts Canada, the Winnifred Stewart Association, the Literacy Foundation of Alberta , Medbuy Alberta , and Rotary International. He has also served on a number of committees related to the education , tax and economic affairs for the Chamber of Commerce both locally and provincially.

David Aldrich, Vice President Student Experience + Admissions

David Aldrich received his BA in Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia, his BSc in Art as Applied to Medicine from the University of Toronto, and his MEd from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. In addition to exhibiting as a fine artist in both Canada and United States, he has maintained a twenty-year career as a medical illustrator with a focus on pharmaceutical advertising. David has served in the Association of Medical Illustrators as Chair of the Board of Governors and has taught medical illustration at the University of Toronto and the Cleveland Institute of Art. In his six years at ACAD, David has served as the Vice-President for Research + Academic Affairs and now the Vice-President for Student Experience + Admissions and now the Vice-President for Student Experience + Admissions.

Wayne Baerwaldt, Acting Vice President Research and Academic Affairs, and Curator of the Illingworth Kerr Gallery

Wayne Baerwaldt is also Director/Curator, Exhibitions at ACAD, Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of British Columbia, Adjunct Curator for the Toronto International Film Festival and Curator for Nuit Blanche, Calgary.  He has previously been the Director of Plug In Gallery, Winnipeg, and Director of The Power Plant, Toronto. Baerwaldt acted as Co-commissioner and Curator for Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller's double award-winning production, The Paradise Institute, at the 49th Venice Biennale (2001) and curated the 2007 Montreal Biennale: Crack the Sky  He has curated and co-curated numerous touring exhibitions including Under the Influence of Fluxus, Pierre Molinier, Joep van Lieshout-Collection 96,  Beck & Al Hansen: Playing With Matches, The Royal Art Lodge: Ask the Dust, Adam Pendleton: BAND, Sheila Spence: All About Star and Richard Boulet: Stitched and Drawn, among others.  He recently co-curated with Thelma Golden a major mid-career touring exhibition of work by Glenn Ligon that opened at The Power Plant, Toronto, and recently closed at MUDAM, Luxembourg.

Shane Smith, Vice President, Advancement

As the Vice President of Advancement, Shane is responsible for the external relations and development initiatives of the college. Overseeing portfolios such as community engagement, donor relations, corporate/foundation partnerships and sponsorships as well as scholarship and award management, special events and alumni relations. As a seasoned advancement professional and member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE),  Design Management Institute (DMI) and the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), Shane has worked for the past decade in Calgary’s fine arts, education and social services sector as a professional and active community volunteer.

Shane is an accomplished classical musician, choral conductor and clinician and holds a triple degree B.FA in Music Dance Theatre from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah where he also studied Vocal Performance and Pedagogy. Shane is also a past recipient of the national MusicFest Canada vocal title and has performed with celebrated singers such as Jose Carreras and Sarah Brightman. Since returning to Calgary after more than a decade abroad (USA, Japan, Poland and Italy), Shane has been involved in a variety of cultural and social institutions including the Conservatory at Mount Royal University, Lunchbox Theatre, Calgary Seniors’ Resource Society and The Calgary Foundation. Most recently Shane was a participant in the inaugural Leading by Design Fellowship at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco.

AnneMarie Dorland, Director of Communications

AnneMarie Dorland has been the Director of Communications at the Alberta College of Art + Design since 2008, where she coordinates both internal and external communications strategies, as well as media relations for the college. She has contributed to several publications on design thinking and the application of creative work processes to business settings over the last five years, including publications in the UK and US, and continues to develop her practice as a print maker and designer.

Originally from Edmonton, Alberta, AnneMarie has worked in a variety of arts and cultural industries, including  not-for-profit artist run centres and design studios in both Quebec and Alberta. She holds a Master of Arts degree with honours in Communications and Media Studies from Concordia University, and a Bachelor of Design degree with honours from the University of Alberta. AnneMarie is a professional member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), and the Design Management Institute (DMI).
