The Illingworth Kerr Gallery at the Alberta College of Art + Design (ACAD) is delighted to present The Moving Images and Sound Collective Festival, an eclectic program of films and speakers that investigates the creative process.   Moving images, sound and new technology have had an increasingly important role in the development of artmaking strategies for emerging artists and designers at ACAD and elsewhere, informing and remaking student experience. Students and faculty at ACAD in turn apply innovative ideas to elevate the creative process and their application of new and recent technologies often   shifts in the way we rethink what we thought we already knew about the world. 

The MISC Festival presents in-depth profiles of the artists, designers and other creatives who reshape the application of the creative process. Each creative producer in her/his own way highlights a remarkably broad investigation that always results in something extraordinary.  Art experts and culture industry insiders in the MISC Festival program reveal not only their formative ideas on the path to realizing the 'extraordinary' but also provide broader insights into the trends that constantly shape and redefine that which is deemed 'contemporary',  from the artist's studio to the commercial cultural industries.   

I hope you enjoy the entire MISC Festival program. Alternative Currency is a documentary that focuses on five emerging artists in their fourth year of their Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts and the landscape that these artists are entering into in the year Calgary was awarded the distinction of Cultural Capital of Canada. By giving the history of Calgary's arts scene, from its grassroots initiatives to its do-it-yourself attitude, Alternative Currency attempts to answer whether there is an alternative to Calgary's current art landscape, if there is hope for these emerging artists, and how a city known for its Western Stampede could become a contemporary art center.

Hollywood has made over 4000 films about Native people; over 100 years of movies defining how Natives are seen by the world. Reel Injun takes an entertaining and insightful look at the Hollywood Indian, exploring the portrayal of North American Natives through the history of cinema. Travelling through the heartland of America, Cree filmmaker Neil Diamond looks at how the myth of “the Injun” has influenced the world’s understanding – and misunderstanding – of Natives. With candid interviews with directors, writers, actors and activists, including Clint Eastwood, Jim Jarmusch, Robbie Robertson, Sacheen Littlefeather, John Trudell and Russell Means, clips from hundreds of classic and recent films, including Stagecoach, Little Big Man, The Outlaw Josey Wales, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and Atanarjuat the Fast Runner, Reel Injun traces the evolution of cinema’s depiction of Native people from the silent film era to today.

Reimagining Innovation and the Creative Process in Film and Television: Laura Michalchyshyn in conversation with Luke Azevedo and Noam Gonick

Laura Michalchyshyn is President/Founder, with Robert Redford, of Sundance Productions.  A media content company based in New York and Los Angeles, Sundance Productions produces fiction and non-fiction content for all platforms. Founded in April 2012, the company works with the best talent, collaborators and partners to produce authentic, entertaining and unique content for the US and international markets. 
In conversation with Calgary Film Commissioner, Luke Azevedo and Canadian filmmaker, Noam Gonick, Laura Michalchyshyn will discuss her role as producer of significant TV, film, and new media productions and screen clips from her various projects. The conversation will focus on the processes of creativity, the public appetite for socially conscious projects, the incorporation of technical and stylistic innovations in moving images and sound, and the viability of the creative industries within an ever changing media economy.

Brazilian artist Iran Do Espírito Santo produces some of the most significant site-specific installations in the world, exploring the space between the concrete and the abstract. He seeks ways to critically engage or unhinge high modernist ideals associated with “progressive” architecture and design.  In this middle space or gap Santo combines wit and paradox. In the summer of 2011 Santo and a team of artists produced a twenty-year retrospective of his large-scale drawings in the Illingworth Kerr Gallery at ACAD.  Santo’s drawings, in combinations of ink, show polish or latex paint are beguiling: some reflect light and others appear to absorb light, all produced directly onto gallery walls. Some drawings provide an Op Art form of visual vibration to the retina while other massive drawings produce a sensational but subtle shift of perception from a fifty-grade grey scale. This short documentary attempts to capture the experiential quality of the stunning drawings themselves.

The Magus

The Magus is a multi-format, process-based experimental film that explores the root of artistic creation. The film documents visual artist, C. Graham Asmundson's body of work over a rigorous six-month period. Filmmaker, Jaimz Asmundson, Graham’s son, uses cinematography and editing as magical weapons to ritualistically birth, destroy and resurrect his father's work. Through psychedelic imagery and machine-gun editing, the resulting film is a stylized, hyper-kinetic, cinematic manifestation of the Asmundsons' personal exploration of occult ceremonies and experiences. Working this uncommon practice, the father/son team explore mind-altered states and invoke unnatural resurrections; where unforeseen demons and other spiritual forces are often released.

Snapshot: The Art Of Photography, Fred Herzog

Fred Herzog was born in Stuttgart, Germany but is a Vancouver treasure. As a young man with no photographic skills, he arrived in Vancouver in 1952 and after picking up a camera he started documenting the city he came to love and call home. He captured the city and its life in startling historical detail.  His work today is highly collectable and commands international attention. And he still wanders the city with his beloved camera looking to freeze more time for eternity.

Walk With Us

Walk with Us is an exploration of the collaborative work of Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, two of Canada’s most acclaimed visual artists. Famed for their site specific audio walks and viewer immersive pieces this doc gives a unique insight into their ephemeral and often mesmerizing work.

A Man Without a World

The Man Without A World is credited to the legendary (and imaginary) 1920s Soviet director, Yevgeny Antinov. But the film is anything but old. In fact, Antinov himself is the creation of contemporary filmmaker Eleanor Antin. A world-renowned artist, author and performer, Antin has exhibited her work at major museums around the world. In her art. Antin explores history through the eyes of various personas, including Eleanor Nightingale (a nurse in the Crimean War) and Eleanora Antinova, the famous black ballerina in Diaghilev’s Ballet Russe who wanted to star in Swan Lake but was only allowed "ethnic" roles like Pocahontas. This great and fictional dancer also appeared in Antin's earlier work From the Archives of Modern Art and The Last Night of Rasputin, also distributed by Milestone.

Persistence of Vision

A tale of art, obsession, and dreams, Persistence of Vision is the untold story of the greatest animated film never made.

Stephen Friedman Gallery is delighted to present a video of Tom Friedman's recent solo exhibition featuring the artist's walkthrough, directed by Sketch Films. Furthering the artist's exploration and transformation of the familiar and the everyday, the exhibition promises an exciting range of materials and themes elevated beyond their original form and executed with mesmerising skill. Painstakingly created, the works reveal deeper intricacies from every viewpoint as the delicate nature of the material is revealed. Styrofoam, wood, wire, paper and stainless steel are all transformed by the artist turned alchemist.
