The Company of Albertans

April 7 - May 5, 2013
Forestburg & District Museum

The Company of Albertans is an exhibition of large-scale portrait photographs shot during the summer of 2012 by Los Angeles-based photographer, Blake Little.

The Company of Albertans was produced with the assistance of the Alberta Rural Development Network in association with the Illingworth Kerr Gallery @ the Alberta College of Art + Design (Kurtis Lesick) and rural Alberta community liaisons, Kelly and Glen Hall, Stavely, and Darcy Jahns, Forestburg.

Notes on the exhibition:

What intrigued Blake Little about rural Alberta was the diversity of human subjects he met over twelve days in late June-early July, 2012, thanks entirely to the personal introductions made by two knowledgeable Stavely area ranchers, Glen and Kelly Hall.  Doors opened and Little was invited in to capture a diverse range of rural inhabitants, from working cowboys and cowgirls of all ages, to rodeo contestants, rodeo princesses, stock contractors, elders, farmers and feedlot workers.  Little’s subjects were largely rural Alberta folks, some were visitors passing through Alberta, some were met by chance at seasonal rodeos in Arrowwood, Airdrie, Ponoka, or Calgary. Other subjects were formally introduced at the end of a dusty grid road leading to the Chinook Feedlot near Vulcan or well-known ranches around Nanton and Stavely.  Working with the support of two student interns, Kris Weinmann and Jenny Wyma from the Alberta College of Art + Design, Little traveled the seemingly endless side roads and highways of Alberta with a skilled lighting technician, John Lichtwardt. From one community to the next with a portable photo studio and lighting system, Little shot hundreds of portraits, always in expectation of that ever elusive perfect moment and perfect composition.

There are currently 37 portraits in The Company of Albertans exhibition, each portrait measuring 30x40” and, depending on available exhibition space, all or a selection of the portraits may be presented.
