Sexual Assault Awareness + Prevention Week
September 18-22, 2017, is Sexual Assault Awareness + Prevention Week (SAAPW) at ACAD. The goal of SAAPW is to raise awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities on how to prevent it.
Sexual violence is a major public health, human rights, and social justice issue and it's everybody's responsibility to end it.
Thank you for getting involved and for supporting ACAD's SAAPW efforts! The following events are happening:
Monday, September 18, 2017 - Consent is Sexy Poster Campaign Launches
Tuesday, September 19, 2017 - #IBelieveYou
ACAD has joined other Alberta Post-Secondary Institutions and community partners in the “I Believe You” campaign for the past two years. “I Believe You” is a public awareness campaign funded by the Alberta Government and coordinated by the Association of Alberta Sexual Assault Services (AASAS). It is designed to help us all better respond to survivors of sexual assault.
A positive response is one of the simplest but also most powerful and effective ways to encourage survivors to come forward. Since sexual assault is a severely underreported crime, demonstrating that you will believe, listen to, and support survivors is an important way to increase disclosures and help survivors to heal.
Over the past two years, the “I Believe You” campaign has helped equip people to give a positive response to survivors of sexual assault. Of potentially greater importance, reporting to police has increased by 20%, indicating that the stigma surrounding this crime is shrinking.
This year, the campaign continues to promote a culture of telling. But the focus is no longer mainly on encouraging survivors to tell someone. Instead, IBY is encouraging responders to show survivors that it is safe to tell, and if they choose to tell, they will be believed.
ACAD’s inaugural event has inspired the theme for this year’s campaign: a graffiti wall with signatures, drawings, and messages of support to survivors. By posting images on Instagram and Twitter (#IBelieveYou), you can help make ACAD’s wall part of the “big picture” of the IBY campaign’s “digital mosaic.”
Representatives from Calgary Communities Against Sexual Abuse will be joining the counselling team on campus September 19 from 10: a.m. until 2 p.m. Along with the graffiti wall, information about the campaign and community supports for survivors of sexual assault will be available.
Thursday, September 21, 2017 - CCASA - Sexual Assault Awareness + Prevention Workshop
WHEN: 12 until 3 p.m.
WHERE: ACAD Boardroom
This three-hour workshop presented by Calgary Communities Against Sexual Abuse encourages participants to engage in conversations about the dynamics of sexual assault within our communities. Participants will have a chance to increase their knowledge of sexual assault, challenge common misconceptions, and explore core facts about how and why sexual violence continues to occur. Participants will leave with a better understanding of the impacts of sexual assault and will be able to effectively respond to disclosures.
