Nuit Blanche Calgary is a late-night interactive art festival that originated in France and has quickly spread to other parts of the globe.
The contemporary arts festival brings people together “en masse” for a large-scale, one night only, unique, and immersive art experience. ACAD’s Illingworth Kerr Gallery was thrilled to once again be a producing partner of Nuit Blanche Calgary in September 2014.
“We had well over 15,000 people attend the 2014 event, compared to 10,000 people at the 2012 event”, says ACAD Alum Kris Weinmann, Event Manager for Nuit Blanche Calgary. “Its so rewarding to be part of something that is being embraced by the community, and not just by artists, but by a broader community of Calgarians who want to participate in, and be part of, the growing arts scene in their city.”
Nuit Blanche Calgary 2014 was the follow up to the awe-inspiring and inaugural event, NBC 2012. The first event saw an audience of over 10,000 people over the course of the night and attracted international attention through its six inspiring performance art projects. NBC 2014 saw new live art works by visiting and Alberta-based performance artists that inspired and delighted the all-ages audience on September 20, 2014.
ACAD, the Illingworth Kerr Gallery, and the other co-producers of NBC 2014, increased collaboration with downtown cultural institutions and businesses, as well as expanded the number of performance art projects that audiences experienced at the Municipal and Olympic Plazas in downtown Calgary. The city’s downtown came alive with unforgettable live performance art produced by fantastic artists and student volunteers doing remarkable, unique installations. ACAD Alum artists, Wednesday Lupypciw, Sarah Smalik and Natasha Alphonse all produced significant new works for NBC 2014.
NBC has received accolades from Calgary’s Mayor Naheed Nenshi (who participated in NBC 2014), Calgary Arts Development, Calgary2012, The Calgary Herald, and received a Vitality Award from Downtown Calgary. Artworks co-produced by NBC have gone on to tour internationally, proving once again that through collaborative partnerships, ACAD and the Illingworth Kerr Gallery can, and are, making a significant impact on the cultural fabric of our city, our nation, and beyond.
