Village Brewery

Alberta College of Art + Design and Village Brewery partnered together to provide communication design students a chance to test out their skills in a real-world environment and to inspire more community partnerships such as this.

It was really an invaluable opportunity to be able to participate in a real world project. - Taylor Plemel, 3rd year Graphic Design major

Third year Graphic Design major Taylor Plemel was impressed with the amount of drive and passion that her classmates put into their Village Brewery projects. “It was really an invaluable opportunity to be able to participate in a real world project,” said Taylor. “As a student I would love to see more opportunities like this one, we were able to test our skills in a real-world environment and everyone rose to the challenge.”

Students designed a cask of beer and all of the branding material around it and presented their ideas to a panel for judging and feedback. The top four designs were selected and the students worked with the Village brewers to create their cask. The public could then taste the creations and see the design and inspiration behind them at local beer hall, National on 8th.

“ACAD’s School of Communication Design embraces working with community partners on advertising, branding, graphic design or illustrative projects," said Ian Fitzgerald an Instructor and coordinator of the partnership. "When students' talents, curriculum requirements, learning outcomes and bonafide marketing communications goals are aligned, everybody wins.”

"This was a really fun collaboration for Village with ACAD and National. This talented group of students came up with some incredible concepts and designs and really made them work within the Village brand," said Jim Button, one of the brewery's founders. "There were great learning opportunities for everyone involved and we were excited to tap the casks and taste their creations!"
