DESIGN

INTRO TO GRAPHIC DESIGN | NEW COURSE

INSTRUCTOR Sandy Wong

Get introduced to visual communication design and what being a graphic designer involves. You will learn to problem solve and generate ideas through thumbnail sketching, as you increase your abilities and output. Focus on using the elements and principles of design effectively as you work in-class with guidance from your instructor. You will use a variety of graphic design methods including; typography, narrative illustration, and decoration. Look at packaging and magazines and brand logos to inspiration and inform your work. Drawing botanical and fruit forms from life takes careful perception and good hand eye coordination. You will develop keen observational drawing skills through a number of studio-based assignments, and be introduced to (or review) colour theory and how to successfully use colour pencils to get rich, vibrant colours. CALLIGRAPHY | NEW COURSE

Learn the art of calligraphy, and how to make beautifully handwritten pages. Use calligraphy pens and nibs with traditional ink, as you focus on creating correct letterforms of different calligraphic scripts through practice and in-class projects. Pen and ink drawings have a long history in art, with a very distinctive look and feel about them. Try your hand at this classical black and white approach as you learn a number of mark making techniques and how to effectively produce various tones and shades. You will work through a series of projects that will include photo-realistic rendering as well as more expressive ones, and even work with a little added colour. Like making your own clothes but have a hard time finding interesting patterns? Or maybe you are interested in upholstering a piece of furniture, but need a pattern to follow to get started. Learn how to make your own. Your instructor will introduce the basic concepts of pattern making through 3D form draping, flat pattern manipulation, and pattern replication from existing patterns. PAPER SCULPTURE IN A SHADOW BOX

Create a small, low relief paper sculpture to hang on your wall. Learn how to produce a number of different effects with just an x-acto knife and a piece of paper. Learn proper papercutting and folding techniques and transform two-dimensional sheets of paper into three-dimensional sculptures. BOOK SCULPTURE | NEW COURSE

Give an old book a new life! Start with an unwanted book as your base, and experiment with altering techniques; including using the book as the base for a three-dimensional sculpture, or using subtractive methods to carve out new spaces and layers inside the book.
