Successful awards will be granted based on the relevance of the travel and the realism of the budget, with reference to the merit of the applicant’s previous work. Whether travelling near or far, for the purposes of a formal residency or independent exploration, all eligible students may apply for this award.
Within 45 day upon return, the successful applicant must provide proof of completion of their program and present a written report detailing their travel. This report may be delivered in whatever form the applicant deems most appropriate, whether written, recorded, or visual (photography, drawings, video, etc.) and will be shared with the donors. It is hoped that insights, learning, and other revelations will be shared with the student’s peers.
Blythe K.V. Brown was a physician, father and life-long adventurer. Orphaned at a young age, Blythe cultivated a spirit of independence and tenacity that put him through Medical School and won the heart of another young doctor – Marina Skulsky. Adventure mates and kindred spirits, Blythe and Marina were married in 1975, traveled the world exploring its wonders, and raised a family of four children together.
Blythe nurtured a deep love for photography, writing, drawing, and learning, continuing to travel with his family in a tireless effort to expand their imagination. He passed away before he could complete his final adventure – walking and photographing the ancient Camino pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain.
In memory of him and his ongoing creative spirit, his family has created the Dr. Blythe K.V. Brown Exploration Scholarship. This award is for artists who hear the calling of distant places, and feel that travel will enhance their understanding of the world. It is hoped that the scholarship will help the recipient catalyze a more developed and contextually relevant relationship with the global arts community, and nurture their adventurous spirit. In 2009, Blythe’s partner Marina completed the pilgrimage to Santiago in his honour. Read about her adventures.
