Through structured interaction between students at all levels and a workshop approach to process-oriented instruction, the Glass program provides an exciting and collaborative learning environment.
Practical studio instruction is presented in a workshop style environment and skills relating to process are acquired through an accumulation of experience, while other aspects of the curriculum are structured sequentially and encourage students to develop to a fourth-year experience that is self-directed. This approach also encourages the students to achieve post-college success in the studio and / or further education.
Instructors in the area provide a broad range of experience and practice. In addition, our guest artist program continues to attract high-profile international glass artists for short-term workshops that complement or augment the curriculum and also offer our students contact with the broader glass community. Community is important for the graduate, and the glass program at ACAD encourages and supports student participation in national and international conferences.
The Glass program is an inclusive, creative learning environment based on the combined principles of play, experimentation, and discovery. Students are exposed to a diverse range of processes, working methodologies, and theoretical concerns as they acquire skills, material understanding, and community involvement centered around creative practice.
The Glass curriculum is team-taught with a collaborative approach to instruction. At points in the curriculum, majors at all levels participate in workshop-style input and critical dialogue.
Student learning, creative production, and inquiry are carried out in an environment predicated on involvement, outreach and integration. Learning occurs through one-on-one and group discussions, as well as through demonstrations, assignments, lectures, seminars, and tutorials based on individual learning outcomes.
Glass second and third year first-semester courses are project-based. Assignments are directed toward the development of technical and conceptual skills and an enhanced aesthetic sensibility. The assignments develop research skills and independent approaches to personal practice that evolve into student-directed learning in the second semester of third year and into the fourth.
In third and fourth year, students create work proposals that are the basis for ongoing dialogue, research, creative activities, critical feedback, time management skills and the development of individual learning outcomes.
Outside the classroom, Glass students participate in exchanges, field trips, practicum courses, and other community-based learning activities, as well as summer workshops, exhibitions and conferences. Extracurricular events are also encouraged, including special project initiatives that enhance team building and skill development. A robust visiting artist program further enhances the learning environment.
ACAD’s Glass faculty share their broad range of experience in a collaborative, dynamic learning environment. High-profile guest artists add further diversity to instruction and mentorship.
