#I/We Believe You
WHEN: Tuesday, September 20 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
WHERE: Main Mall, Alberta College of Art + Design
Alberta College of Art + Design is joining other Alberta post-secondary communities to support survivors of sexual assault on September 20, 2016 (and every day) on our campus through “I Believe You,” a public awareness campaign designed to help us all better respond to survivors of sexual assault.
The campaign, funded by the Government of Alberta, is being led by the Association of Alberta Sexual Assault Services (AASAS) and is supported by community organizations throughout the province
A goal of this collaborative provincial campaign is to educate the public on the power of a positive response as one of the simplest and most effective ways to encourage survivors to come forward.
A key message this year is moving from “me” to “we.” Building on the success of last year’s campaign, which helped to significantly increase the number of disclosures and positive responses, #ibelieveyou is inviting people to stand beside survivors as a whole community. We are inviting individuals and groups to upload short videos demonstrating support for survivors along with a tag, challenging others to join you in making “We Believe You” the first response to a disclosure (think the “Ice Bucket Challenge” for ALS).\
In addition, ACAD is inviting students, faculty, staff, and management to come together, get inspired, and create work on a shared space in the Main Mall September 20, 2016 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Representatives from Calgary Communities Against Sexual Abuse will be on hand with information about how to spread the I Believe You message through social media as well as information on community support services for survivors of sexual assault.
ACAD’s Registered Psychologist and Counsellor, Jason Bauche, worked to bring the campaign to campus to raise awareness of this severely under-reported crime and will also be at the event along with student volunteers to provide information about counselling services at ACAD.
