Mental Illness Awareness Week

Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) is an annual national public education campaign designed to help open the eyes of Canadians to the reality of mental illness. The week was established in 1992 by the Canadian Psychiatric Association, and is now coordinated by the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health (CAMIMH) in cooperation with all its member organizations and many other supporters across Canada.

Monday, October 3 - Kick Off (ACAD Main Mall)

  • MIAW Launches at ACAD
  • Display containing resources to raise awareness regarding mental illness + schedule of events

Tuesday, October 4 - Beyond Stigma: Increasing Our Understanding of Mental Health in the Workplace

WHERE: ACAD Boardroom

12 p.m. - 1 p.m.

In this workshop the following topics will be addressed:

In today’s society, there still remains a lack of awareness and even sometimes bias related to mental health problems. This wellness session will allow participants to enhance their understanding of the personal and environmental factors that can have an impact on mental health, as well as the most appropriate prevention and intervention strategies available.

During this one-hour wellness session participants will:

  • Define what mental illness is and not
  • Learn about the impact of sitigma
  • Understand the importance of mental health in the workplace
  • Recognize signs + symptoms of common mental health issues
  • Gain strategies to support mental health in the workplace

Lunch will be provided.

Wednesday, October 5 - Be Keen and Wear Green to Raise Awareness for Mental Health

ALL DAY

Thursday, October 6 - National Depression Screening Day + Let Go of Your Worries (Main Mall)

10 a.m. to 2 p.m

Students will be invited to write their problems or worries on paper, then insert them into environmentally safe/biodegradable balloons.

The balloons will then be let go by the students into the air, and in turn releasing their problems.

Friday, October 7 - Post-It Your Support for Mental Illness Awareness

  • A moveable wall will be up and students, faculty + staff are encourage to create a message of support for mental illness awareness

One-in-five Canadians will suffer from a mental disorder in their lives, let’s make our ACAD campus a safe and supportive environment.
