$30,000 In Prizes Announced For Students and High Schools

Art exhibition and competition honoured students from Alberta, Nunavut the Northwest Territories

June 22, 2015

Calgary, AB – “YES!!” Is the excited response from Judy Nelson’s students each year when they hear that they earned a spot in the ACAD SHOW OFF! Exhibition “It is a really big deal for them. My students are over the moon to share their talents,” says the Fine Art Instructor at Lord Beaverbrook High School, “The students see that their time, efforts, planning, and creativity are validated by those they respect and value.

The annual juried exhibition of high school student’s art and design work from across Alberta, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories,  has been inspiring students to consider a Fine Art education for six years and that inspiration is backed up with over $30,000 in prizes made possible by a committed partnership between ACAD and Enbridge Inc.

Of the 200 applicants, 65 high school art students gathered to take their first step as exhibiting professional artists on June 13. Winners of the competition were announced (full list below) including the grand prize - the Enbridge ACAD Show Off! Entrance Scholarship which covers tuition for the first year of studies toward a Bachelor of Design or Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at ACAD. The scholarship was offered to Ms. Carlan Hughes. Miss Hughes’ school, Central Memorial High School will also receive a matching grant.

The tangible support to the schools also makes this a stand out program according to Nelson. “Last year a senior student at our school won a half year tuition prize and with the matching grant, we have been able to build new display cases in our Wood Tech program to house future 3D displays.  This has provided the educational and practical opportunity for other students to learn, grow and create.”

“Education is essential – it inspires young people, it opens doors, it provides hope for a better future and it is a powerful enabler,” says D’Arcy Levesque, Vice President, Enterprise Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility, Enbridge Inc. “At Enbridge we believe that education is one of the most powerful gifts you can give. We’re honoured to be able to support emerging visual and performing artists from ACAD and educational opportunities.”

ACAD is delighted to partner with Enbridge Inc. on this award as the company has a long track record of supporting cultural endeavors in the province.

“Show Off is a superb program that supports art education and development in our schools,” explains Dr. Daniel Doz, President and CEO of ACAD. “It is paramount that ACAD as a premier art, craft and design educational environment nurtures and celebrates youth art exploration and expression, and we are grateful to Enbridge for supporting this vision of building an exciting future.”

Over 60 pieces of work from finalists will be on exhibition in the IKG until June 27, 2015.
