Art, Craft and Design Market Attracts More Exhibiting Artists
ACAD Students’ Association Public Art Market Expands with Increasing Student Participation
Check out what Calgary’s emerging young artists have created this school year at Alberta College of Art + Design Students’ Association spring Show + Sale, March 17-19, 2016.
Celebrating over 25 years of creative culture and student advocacy, the ACAD Students’ Association boasts of a rising participation. With over 200 artists showcasing their talent, 100 more than the previous sale, Show + Sale welcomes the public to view and purchase from over 4,000 pieces of handmade works.
“Show + Sale has become one of the largest community building events that ACAD Students’ Association offers. It is the only event that encourages all areas and departments within the school come together and engage with each other,” states Lisa Sudeikat, VP Community Initiatives with the Students’ Association and 4th year drawing major.
The opening night of the sale hosts a First Night Fundraiser on Thursday, March 17 from 5-8 pm, with proceeds from the twenty-five dollar ticketed event going to support student scholarship. Along with the company of like-minded community art supporters, attendees receive advance access to a wide variety of original artworks as well as the opportunity to mingle with participating artists. General admission by donation takes place Friday, March 18 from 12–7 pm and Saturday, March 19 from 12–4 pm.
Whatever your preferred form, you’ll find it here, with work being represented from several of the College’s programs including: painting, drawing, glass, fibre, printmaking, sculpture, photography, ceramic, and jewellery.
With over 30% of ACAD graduates going on to pursue their own entrepreneurial work, Show + Sale provides students with the opportunity to develop the skills and experience necessary to build a successful art practice after graduation. “Show + Sale is a tremendous opportunity for our artists to support their peers, celebrate student creativity, and share their work with the Calgary Community,” notes Sudeikat. “It is so exciting to be a part of because it has such a huge impact on student success here at ACAD.”
