Lodgepole Center: Community Mural - Call for Submissions

AUArts is seeking to commission an alum to create 2-D artworks for the window wall in the Lodgepole Center. You will mentor our Indigenous students in this work and provide an artist talk to inspire the entire community. Your work will welcome students, Elders, faculty, staff and community members to the Lodgepole Center. Our desire is to showcase our alumni, elevate the student experience, and act as a source of inspiration for emerging creatives, campus visitors and art lovers. 
 
DETAILS

  • Eligibility: AUArts alumni only (confirmed graduates of ACA, ACAD, AUArts diploma or degree programs). Preference will be given to Indigenous alum.   
  • Entry Requirements:
    • Email to alumni@auarts.ca
    • Attach or link to online portfolio 
    • Attach or link to artist bio that includes background on other public art experience
    • Attach or link to five images of your own or are in the public domain that reflect your definition of “Imagining Futures” and would inspire your creation
  • Selection Process: Submissions will be reviewed by a team at AUArts that may include faculty and staff and fellow alumni
  • Submission Deadline: 6 PM October 21, 2022 
  • Notification to Artist: No later than 6 PM October 24, 2022
  • Installation: Six consecutive days in November 2022
  • Requirements:
    • The theme is “Imagining Futures”.
    • 2-D artworks only.
    • Sketches of the final mural must be reviewed and approved by AUArts and must be aligned with our policies and procedures and reflective of our Mission, Vision and Values.
    • One hour Artist Talk to inspire students about your artwork and career, to occur before the end of 2022 on a mutually agreed date.
    • Participate in unveiling and promotional efforts.
    • Involve and mentor eight students in the installation.
    • The work will remain intact and not be painted over for a minimum of two years. 
    • According to AUArts specifications, the selected alum artist will need to abide by health and safety protocols, coordinate approved equipment and insurance for the project, as well as approved supplies, including indoor paint and other materials.
    • Installation during no more than six consecutive days in November 2022 to be negotiated with AUArts.
    • AUArts logo, and the artist's signature, program, and grad year, must be included prominently next to the completed work.
  • Size:
    • See below images as reference to understand the space.
    • Three windows on concrete wall.
    • Total area is approximately 17’ wide by 8.5’ tall.
    • The artwork from the top of the windows down could be directly on the concrete wall surface (17’ wide by 5’ tall). The artwork above the windows would be on board, drywall or canvas and installed on the wall (17’ wide x 3.5’ high).
    • The bottom vent cover area is approximately another 2’ high. We would work together on a solution to incorporate this or not into the mural
    • – a solution to add this into the mural is to be determined
  • Artist Fee:
    • According to the CARFAC Full Day Professional Service Fees
    • Six (6) days x $579 per day = $3,474
      • Proposals only for artworks that take a maximum of six days to complete the project
      • Fee includes artist concept, revisions, final concept, installation
      • Fee also includes:
        • Interactions with AUArts including concept approval and installation requirements
        • Time to involve and mentor eight students in the installation
        • One Hour Artist Talk by end of 2022
        • Unveiling and promotion
  • Your expenses additionally compensated
    • Eight student honorariums at $250 for each student for a total of $2,000
    • At cost for paint/supplies/equipment to a maximum of $1,000
  • As the health and safety of our community is our number one priority, strict protocols exist, and we have the flexibility to change any aspects of this Call for Submissions and this project based on pandemic public health restrictions.
