Show + Sale Just Got So Much Better: Meet The Students Revolutionizing ACAD’s Spring Art Market
March 3, 2015
Fill your home and your heart with one of a kind artworks and support students at the Alberta College of Art + Design (ACAD) March 27-28, 2015. Experience Calgary’s emerging art scene; painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, photography, glass, ceramic, fibre and jewellery are among the showcased mediums at the sale.
The Alberta College of Art + Design Students’ Association (ACADSA) hosts the weekend market with a VIP presale entry for five dollars on Friday, March 27 from 12 pm – 7 pm, and general admission is by donation on Saturday, March 28 from 11am -5 pm. Show + Sale proceeds are collected and distributed in direct support of the ACAD student body.
Over 30% of ACAD graduates go on to start their own business and entrepreneurial work and in support of this, Show + Sale provides students with the skills and experience to build a successful commercial art practice after graduation.
The main objective of the bi-annual retail program is to provide an educational introduction to entrepreneurship in arts and culture. This is supported throughout the year by seminars and hands on workshops facilitated by a diverse faculty of experts within arts and culture, business, and academia.
Sarah Grodecki, President of the ACAD Students’ Association speaks to the growth of Show + Sale over the last three years, “We have been hearing from a lot of students that they want more hands-on experience managing their careers before graduation. To address this need we’re developing programming that offers students the opportunity to work directly with advocates of Calgary’s arts and culture community.”
Students are responding positively to this recent shift in focus of the sale. Taryn Nakamura, a 4th Year Photography student has found that the Show + Sale has given her an opportunity to explore projects outside of her major of study.
“In my final year of school at ACAD I decided that it was time to participate in Show + Sale. I had no idea what to expect and I put my knitted scarves in not knowing what the response would be like. I was more than thrilled to see that they all sold on the very first night. Show + Sale not only allows students to sell work, but it also allows you to explore other creative areas outside of your major. You can submit any type of art to Show + Sale regardless of what you are majoring in. I think this is great because many of us have side art practices in addition to our major and we like to express this work but we don’t always get the chance.”
