High School students SHOW OFF in competition for $30,000 in prizes including full tuition

Art exhibition and competition inspires high school students from across Alberta

I want to see what my art can do.” Says soft spoken grade 11 student Leia Guo when asked why she is excited to participate in the ACAD SHOW OFF 2016, opening Saturday, June 11 from 2pm-4pm at ACAD’s Illingworth Kerr Gallery and running until June 25.

Leia is on site at ACAD this week working on an installation piece for her entry in the competition and she clearly comes into her own voice when talking more about her work. “I decided to use painters tape for the temporary installation inspired by Occam's Razor theory exploring the idea that ‘the simplest theory that fits all the facts and corresponds most closely to reality’; in other words, keep it simple, so that’s what I’m doing. I’m looking forward to building something from scratch.”

Guo’s teacher, Brent P Gough, Creative Arts Learning Leader at Henry Wise Wood High School, loves the fact that SHOW OFF helps his students push boundaries.

“What pleases me most with this process is that ACAD embraces those less conventional, and more experimental, art forms that are not as likely to “impress” the typical high school audience.  When that sort of piece is selected, it totally shifts the artists’ framework, and provides an affirmation for being inventive and innovative.  In many ways, it provides vindication for the artist who is willing to take risks!”

The annual juried exhibition of high school student’s art and design work from across Alberta, has been inspiring students to consider a Fine Art education for seven years and that inspiration is backed up with over $30,000 in prizes made possible by a committed partnership between ACAD and Enbridge Inc.

“Education is essential – it inspires young people, it opens doors, and it provides hope for a better future,” says D’Arcy Levesque, Vice President, Enterprise Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility, Enbridge Inc. “At Enbridge we believe that education is one of the most powerful gifts you can give, and we’re honoured to support emerging visual and performing artists from ACAD.”

Of the 200 applicants, over 6o high school art students and their families and teachers will be on hand to take their first step as exhibiting professional artists on June 11 from 2pm-4pm at ACAD’s Illingworth Kerr Gallery.  Award recipients will be announced including the grand prize - the Enbridge ACAD Show Off! Entrance Scholarship which covers tuition for the first year of studies toward a Bachelor of Design or Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at ACAD.
