“ATB has always been a huge supporter of arts and culture and we seek one-of-a-kind opportunities in the communities we serve”

Creativity is one of the commodities that ATB Financial (ATB) invests in heavily, firmly believing in the ability of the arts to transform communities for the better.  ATB looks for opportunities to highlight an Alberta rich in arts and culture, and creates a sense of self through discovering and developing creative skills. Alberta College of Art + Design (ACAD) is grateful that ATB provides an opportunity to ACAD’s emerging artist community to display their work publicly in the Stephen Avenue Branch’s Art Vault Gallery.

“ATB has always been a huge supporter of arts and culture and we seek one-of-a-kind opportunities in the communities we serve,” said Sandra Huculak, Managing Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at ATB. “We had a chance with our new Stephen Avenue location to showcase Alberta artists in an exciting way and do something no other bank was doing.”

Branch Manager Lauren Slen and her colleagues seized the opportunity to transform the long vacant Hudson Block on Calgary’s Stephen Avenue into a meeting place that creates conversation and inspires creativity. When the discussion moved towards an opportunity to display local art, Lauren’s vision was to create a platform for emerging artists to display their work.

“I don’t remember a lot of opportunities to express my creative side in Calgary during my time as a dancer. There were plenty of spaces for established talent, but not much for young artists,” Lauren said. “My initial thought went to creating a platform for upcoming artists to show off their work and I immediately thought of the students at ACAD. That’s how the partnership began.” Lauren sought out ACAD’s Engagement Department for an initial exhibition that laid the foundation for a multi-year partnership to display the work of ACAD’s outstanding student and alumni community.

“ACAD has an incredible reputation in Alberta and beyond and this partnership gives us an opportunity to celebrate what their community can do within the Art Vault Gallery,” said Sandra.  “It really is a moving experience to immersing ourselves in these art installations and meet the future leaders in the arts community. It's been an extraordinary partnership so far and I'm really looking forward to seeing what the students and alumni come up with next.”

ATB is also proud to support the ATB Financial Healing through the Arts Award at the Mayor's Lunch for Arts Champions. The award recognizes artists whose practices encompass health and wellness to improve the wellbeing of individuals, groups or communities. The award also promotes the healing nature of the arts and its critical role as a means of expression for those facing physical or mental health issues. This $5,000 cash award allows an artist the ability to continue their work and expand their impact.

ATB is the largest Alberta-based financial institution, serving over 700,000 Albertans and Alberta-based businesses since 1938. Across the province, they are always looking for new ways to their financial expertise and network of dedicated team members to make a difference in Alberta’s communities. ATB Financial is a proud supporter of the arts in Alberta, including Calgary Arts Development 2012 initiative, the National Music Centre, the Calgary International Film Festival, the Art Gallery of Alberta and the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival, among others.

ACAD thanks ATB for their generous and continued support and looks forward to helping move creativity forward as a key economic driver in Alberta, Canada and beyond.
